Security for Students

posted 20 Feb 2012 11:42 by Steve Bullock   [ updated 20 Feb 2012 11:52 ]

Inspired by a post by Uni Security, I thought that a re-post of the following would be of interest, particularly now that students have had time to write plenty of irreplaceable stuff!!

Summary for those who don't like reading:
1) install Dropbox for data backup (http://db.tt/sKrDAht - this link for an extra 250MB free)
2) install Prey for hardware tracking (http://preyproject.com/)

COMPUTER BACKUP AND SECURITY
***
We've had a couple of students have laptops stolen, and I've heard others talk about data loss for other reasons. Here are some tips for hardware and data protection.

DATA
As a student your data is priceless. Ensuring that you can access it in case of hardware loss or failure takes a lot of the stress out of any unwelcome surprises. At minimum, you should keep your data in two separate places, for example on your hard drive and on a USB stick. Software such as SyncToy (http://tinyurl.com/25jm2ue) can make synchronising to an external drive nice and easy. If you can, taking a further less-frequent backup and keeping it somewhere physically separate, such as at your parents' house, will ensure that you can't lose both copies. Another good place is your University document space - this should get backed up in several places in your department.

I like to go a step further and know that my files are safe and easily accessible wherever I am without ever having to remember to backup or synchronise. Dropbox (http://db.tt/sKrDAht - use this link for an extra 250MB free) is a utility that runs on your computer, anything you store in your Dropbox will be copied to the internet. You can access your files through their website and they are synchronised to any other computer on which you install the program - it even keeps old versions and deleted files! I keep all my Uni files in here and it does its thing automatically - it's saved my bacon quite a few times. It's free for up to 2GB but they charge for more than that, so MP3s and pictures go on an external hard drive which I keep in a cupboard.

HARDWARE
First line of defence here is common sense. Keep your laptop out of sight, particularly if you're on the ground floor. Invest in a Kensington lock (http://tinyurl.com/6jgkztx) to strap it to your desk if you want to leave it out. If it does get lost or nicked, you want to be sure your data's safe so make sure you've got something in place like the above. There's a great utility called Prey (http://tinyurl.com/m2x8tz) which, once installed, will hide on your computer and wait until you log in to tell it your computer's gone, then will log where it is, take pics with your webcam and captures of your screen to help you (and the police) get it back. Prey is also free for the basic service.

I hope this is useful to students. Think about what would happen if you lost all of your work to date, and look ahead to when you have projects and theses on the go - make sure you're prepared just in case.
